ZIMBABWE – BULAWAYO – To save yourself from a lashing from Zimbabwean Superstar Oliver Mutukudzi, never try to take a picture of him when he performs live!

That is what a Bulawayo man learnt the hard way a fortnight ago.

A City man was embarrassed when his favourite musician unleashed a cutting tongue, much to the surprise of the man’s female companion and fans at large.

“We have enough lighting in this place! Can that man over there switch off what he is carrying. We are fighting a thing called piracy and men like him who take pictures without permission are killing us. In future please ask,” said Tuku after he had stopped midway through his third song of the night.

The man, obviously not the only one taking a video footage of  Zimbabwe’s greatest was the unlucky pick out of many fans who also shied from taking any footage after the lashing.

Sources from Mutukudzi’s band said  it was a spur of the moment because he has never been ‘mean’ to his fans. The closest to being mean to his fans has been refusing to be part of a photo shoot citing abuse of his pictures on the Internet.

“That is not his normal behaviour, even overseas where most of his money is made he never complains when people take his pictures. The only thing he does is avoid taking picture or shaking hands with fans,” said a band member.

    3. it’s not the first time Tuku has warned his fans of any video or photo shooting. In sydney l was given a rude awakening trying to do the same.By the look on his face l immediately switched off my gadget. Yes he has a point, piracy is killing their industry, it’s just human nature that we try to get things the easiest way.Technology as well has contributed and is facilitating piracy.
Will musicians win this piracy war in this new world of technology? l have my doubts on that one.
For TUKU, to say the least he should be comfortable with fans taking photos or videos. He is fighting a losing battle.

    8. Tuku should never forget that without fans he is a nobody. Therefore, he should try to be humble and keep his feet on the ground.

Such behaviour will only turn off some of us and we will not be buying his music if he does not show humility towards fellow Zimbabweans.

      Shame on you Tuku!!!

    23. That is true to the core “Tuku has gone VERY, I mean VERY nasty”. In Southend On Sea (UK) he was verbally abusive to fans taking pictures or videos of him on stage. To make matters worse he only performed for just ONE AND A HALF HOURS. Thats pathetic. May be the guy is getting old and losing it.

    27. I am not surprised by Oliver Mtukudzi behavior,That is the last kick of a dying horse. He chose to be in public domain,Why worried about a picture taken by his fans whilst perfoming on stage? It lacks logic.Tuku should understand that the world is changing everyday,He should move with time and understand that his fans has the right to take a picture of him whilst perfoming. His advisers need to tell him to accept the changes of time.Gone are the days when cameras and camcorders were out of the reach of his fans!Wake up TUKU.See you in London soon on your joint show with Thomas Mapfumo.

    31. how things have changed, this is not the first time he has lashed out and for his band members to say so suggests something more sinister going on. He lashed out at another fan in a recent show in UK southend on sea in particular. Now being in diasapora i must say his behavoiur at that particular show was abdominal he played for max 2 hours and left abruptly, many were confused bt we have now become so british and just accept. I like Tuku but i think he has forgotton how he got where he is, mari mu england hatinonge pasi saka kanatisina kuenda kubasa kunona iye we are not expecting to see him for a hour might as well pop into local pub. anyway if someone whats to enagege in piracy y go to a show can download on the interent at home. he choose the wrong time and way of convening an important message and does not have the desire effect, enagege your fans not alinate them, baba we butter your bread hokoyo!

    33. Tuku that is insane piracy has nothing to do with fans taking videos or asking to take photographs with their hero urikurasika papi Tuku I thought you were better than that . Go to any concert people take videos and photographs I have plenty of those I do not use them to disrespect anyone then again respect is mutual. You owe that fan an apology Tuku !

      Comment by Chido — November 4, 2009 @ 3:02 am

    34. I am not sure whether the writer of this story carried some reaserch before publishing it. For your own information Tuku does not allow people to take videos in his shows. You can take as many as pictures you want but not videos. I have attanded several of Tuku shows in Zim and Australia and his stance on videos has not changed. People should go to shows to dance and enjoy themselves not to take videos for the whole night after only paying $5. Its not fair and if Tuku says no, i dont see why he is said to be nusty

I used to respect Tuku, but it seems chiCelebrity chamupinda mumusoro and he thinks he is the ish. What people like Tuku and other Zim celebrity forget is that its the people who put you on top and they will put you back to the ground in the blink of an eye. There are so many humble artists worldwide to who value the support of their fans and i wouldn’t hesitate supporting someone who respects others
