ZIMBABWE – BULAWAYO – The Resident Minister of Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Cain Mathema on Monday declared interest in the position of Vice President.

Mathema who has left his wife for a ZBC Reporter is in a bitter divorce with his wife.

The wife reportedly decided to part ways with the controversial figure after she discovered that Mathema was involved in an affair with a ZBC News reporter, Josephine Mugiyo who is rumored to be pregnant.

“She discovered that Mathema was in love with Josephine and decided that she could not stomach any more of Cain’s behavior,” said a friend to the wife.

When the wife confronted Mathema, he admitted and said he wanted a younger woman to satisfy his sexual needs.

“He would go out drinking and come back drunk, stand by the gate and shout that he wanted to marry a virgin because his wife’s private parts were too ‘wide’,” said the friend.

Mathema becomes the third Zanu-PF cadre to openly declare his interest in occupying the position, which fell vacant after the death of Joseph Msika in August.

The deputy president of the Senate, Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu and former Zipra Chief of Staff Retired Brigadier-General Ambrose Mutinhiri, have declared their interest in the post.

Mathema wrote to the three chairmen of Zanu-PF provinces in Matabeleland region – Bulawayo, Matabeleland South and North – seeking their support.

“I, Ndabazekhaya Cain Ginyilitshe Mathema, do hereby formally advise the three Matabeleland Region Zanu-PF Provinces, through you as Provincial Chairmen, that I would like to stand for the vacant Zanu-PF Vice-President and Second Secretary post left by our late Vice-President and Second Secretary Cde Joseph Msika,” wrote Mathema.

“I do hereby seek your support to enable me to occupy the vacant post.”
Cde Mathema, who politically comes from Matabeleland North Province, said he qualified for the post because he has been consistent throughout his political career, which began at the age of 13.

Mathema, a former Zipra combatant, was trained in the then Soviet Union in the late 1960s and specialised in communications.

“I joined the liberation struggle at the age of 13 years in 1960, and my contribution during the liberation struggle is well known to you, as well as my unwavering commitment to serve the Party and the nation after independence is also well known to you,” he said.

Bulawayo Province has already endorsed the Zanu-PF National Chairman, John Nkomo, as the candidate to fill the VP’s post.

    3. The replacement of the late Vice-President Joseph Msika is a straight forward issue. The line up is John Landa Nkomo Vice-President, and Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu replaces John Nkomo as National Chairman. If Naison Ndlovu forgot who he was all this time when John Nkomo was it the Presidium and now he wants to be reminded by someone malisiously as who he is and would want to jump a queue and confuse the situation then lets forget about him and search for the next person in line. He has exposed his in ability to lead and take decissions as required by the Offices he is aspiring to occupy. In seperate telephone conversations with him and Langa they both specifically agreed and accepted that arrangement as the most logical arrangement. The change of mind by NK suggests the presence of an international conspiracy which is in place to undermine the unity of the people of Zimbabwe within the regime change strategy identifying the Hon. Naison Ndlovu as the central man. For all along the regime change strategists had tried and failed several times to destroy ZANU PF from without and replace President Mugabe and the ZANU PF Government. This is yet another attemp to destroy ZANU PF this time from within using some mostly dubious charactors from ZAPU. They want first to destroy President Mugabe who is the symbol of unity of the people of Zimbabwe by creating a war lord type of political groupings throughout the country. In politics, once there is a wide range of the use of money to buy an opinion then rest be assured of the presence of a neo-colonial arrangement. Practically speaking the search is to replace Dr. Joshua Nkomo who was the President of ZAPU. Are we serious that Ambrose Muthiniri, and Cain Mathema could be co-leaders to President Mugabe, unless we are bringing back the third force theories of the mid 1970s. With no offense to the comrades, when ZPRA was formed, Tshinga Dube, Col. Chirinda and Ambrose Muthiniri were members of FRLIZI Military Command. They all joined ZPRA. Muthiniri was the chief of staff. However Muthiniri and Chirinda rejoined ZAPU only when FROLIZI had collapsed because they did not have academic qualifications as Tshinga Dube Shelton Siwela and Charles Goromonzi who ran away to study abroad. It was Rogers Mangena and myself who spoke to Comrade Jason Moyo Chairman of the Revolutionary Counsil and Dumisi Dabengwa who was the Secretary to readmit them back into ZAPU. There was a stiff resistance from the Revolutionary Counsil Members. As a result we included him in the ZIPA Command in Mozambique away from the home front. But before their command collasped they terrorised non members of FROLIZI in Lusaka and other towns. I was one of those in their hit list and Muthiniri can confirm that. Robson Manyika had to seek protection in ZANLA after attempts had been made on his life. That was the same command that deported the group of Cain Mathema and others to the United Kingdom and a group of 59 recruits back to Rhodesia. On arrival 7 who had operated inside Rhodesia were arrested and hanged. It might also be necessary to educate some people with Mjiba military type of understanding. Ambrose Muthiniri was deputy camp commander at Morogoro Training camp under the late Albert Nxele. Military Instructors or Military Training camps are subordinated to the General Military Head Quarters through the Army Chief of Staff under the direct supervision of the Chief of Personnel and Training. How then could he be senior than his boses at HQ? General Solomon Mujuru was not trained by Muthiniri as such. He was trained by an institution. As for Cain Mathema to be President of ZAPU in unity with ZANU and to co-lead with His Excellency President Mugabe, a wukaqalisi mnawami. Once again John Nkomo and Naison Ndlovu. Undlovu nxa engafuni we look for somebody next in the line but not those who want to claim seniority. Mpofu’s name has been mentioned but when I spoke to him he did not confirm that to me. However in 1985 he stood as a ZANU candidate for Whange and Tsholotsho. He automatically falls out. But it might be important to know the view of genuine members of ZAPU in Unity with ZANU when an inference is being made that ZAPU did not have a clear leadership so kuvela loku ngo ntembuzane.

      Comment by Unknown — October 23, 2009 @ 3:32 am

    14. The selection criterion is senior surviving ZAPU member and not unity set up. As presented by the aspiring candidates, Nkomo don’t qualify to replace Msika. ZAPU members should ask themselves why Nkomo was elevated to that position at the expense of senior members. The answer is obvious, ZANU PF wanted Nkomo because of his relationship with Mugabe. I think ZAPU should select a senior member of their party and not ZANU PF created seniority in the form of Nkomo, a gay accused for that matter.

The other issue is why Matabeleland should select the candidate. The reason is that most of ZAPU members are in the provinces and it does not mean that the person should be from these three provinces. They know the structures of ZAPU and if they are all to pull out of the unity as is the case, they know who is who in all provinces who support ZAPU. For them to say that they want all provinces to select the candidate, its a sign of confusion within the party.

    18. Phekelezela Mphoko, I appreciate the contribution you made to the discussion about the dark cloud hanging over the succession of Vice President Joseph Msika. Your article did not particularly interest me on who is the natural heir to the late Vice-President. I am not keen on this because I view it as a window dressing project which will soon be overtaken by the re-emergence of ZAPU in the political radar. What impacted on me most was the way you drew us back to the revolutionary days of the sixties and seventies. It is the only time since independence that such a piece of an informative article has come from a former high level ZAPU official, let alone from the military wing.

The truth is there are a lot of people who participated in the struggle under the guidance and direction of ZAPU who do not know most of the things you revealed in your article. Such information could have been kept as a secret to the rank and file members of the party because it was possibly thought it could saw seeds of division. The marriage of convenience with the former members of the FROLIZI showed its ugly head after independence when ZANU-PF took advantage of the situation and showed it was better prepared to work with them than with their undiluted ZAPU counterparts. I think if you were to make a survey today, you will possibly realise that the former FROLIZI members are more economically empowered today than their ZAPU counterparts. This is because these people have no deep roots in ZAPU and the ZANU-PF finds itself comfortable in their company. They never fear such people may leave them and join a re-emerging party like ZAPU.

I think filling-in the post of Vice-President by someone from Matebeleland no longer has logic. ZAPU has withdrawn from the unity accord except for a few who are benefitting financially or otherwise from the arrangement. The internal dynamics within ZANU-PF is beginning to show that. This is could be the reason why people like Obert Mpofu and Ambrose Mutinhiri are coming forward to be part of the succession equation. The above two have a feeling that in the eyes of ZANU-PF one way or the other they deserve the post ahead of the likes of John Nkomo and Naison Ndlovu. I cannot say much about the good standing of Ambrose in the ratings of ZANU-PF but as for Obert Mpofu he is proud to have single-handedly kept ZANU-PF afloat in Matebeleland North. He has been winning successive elections whether by hook or crook it does not necessarily matter to his party. In the last election he might have influenced the division of his constituency into two, although I doubt if the actual number of voters may have made that feasible. He introduced Clifford Sibanda to the electorate and he subsequently won the Bubi seat. I tell you if ZANU-PF had its way they will appoint Obert Mpofu ahead of the candidates that you claim are natural heirs to the throne.

I do not mean to undermine your allegiance to the Honourable President Mugabe, but I think you are not critically analysing the present state of affairs in ZANU-PF. You seem to have a good track record in ZAPU but ZANU-PF are not the kind of party to be stuck in the ‘gentlemen’s arrangement’ they made with ZAPU forever. ZANU-PF still needs people from Matebeland to entice voters but not in the way the Unity Accord was entered into. They want the people who are attracting votes in Matabeleland not the ‘non-performers’ who presume they are the next in-line merely because of their seniority. These politicians have become ‘non-performers’ because the electorate in Matebeleland are sick and tired of the Unity Accord which only works to benefit a few senior officials. I also believe that people who have deep-rooted belief in ZAPU like you may one day feel very disappointed when the likes of Obert and Mutinhiri are allowed to jump the queue because their loyalty to ZANU-PF unlike yours is not questionable. The way you crafted your article shows you are still truly ZAPU, all you have to do is go where your contributions will be welcome and join the likes of Dabengwa and Lesabe. ZANU-PF will never view you the same way after those revelations you made. Remember, school children are learning distorted history. You seem to have all the data about the days of the revolution, why not write a book; it could be of great value to future generations. There is a big gap on how ZAPU contributed during the struggle for Zimbabwe to achieve its independence.

I never liked the comment by one of the readers who said your article was not coherent. You made some good important points which may help upcoming historians and researchers. Maybe, next time ask someone you are comfortable to share information with to proof-read for you. Do the same for your book look for someone good in the area. Nevertheless, thank you so much for enlightening the public on ‘Who was who in the ZAPU Vanguard’ during the liberation war.

    21. Zanu PF should accept that Zapu pulled out of the agreement and all this discourse in the appointment of the VP is proof that there are no more zapu structures similar to those that existed before the pullout. Say this Mutiniri guy becomes the VP, he will not be accepted because he is not ndebele, so the Zapu card is not a point for arguement. If it is so, does it mean that for one to be Zapu s/he should have been of ndebele tribe? This confusion is allowed to prevail so that the powers that maybe can impose a VP from the old Zapu. The people of matebeleland have no basis for claiming the VP post, unless the invitation is extended to the real Zapu led by Dabengwa. If zanu PF is serious on winning anything in matebeleland, they should acknowledge the pullout of Zapu, restructure and compete in the region just like any political party. If the people of matebeleland reall want to do away with ZANU PF, they should strategise; e.g. MDC should not field a candidate in Tsholotsho North but campaign for Zapu. Soon people will witness another scenario unveiling, that the MDC M will disolve into MDC T or Zapu. Its either MDC and Zapu joining hands or they loose to Zanu PF.

    24. THis is with reference to a contribution by Mtheliswa Msindo. You remind me of my people in Nkayi abako Msindo. Umsindo owaye thethe uyisekazi ka Chief Madliwa Khumalo. However thank you for your comments. My friend I understand the Zimbabwean situation much deeper than you think. I am one of the first 12 people, who are the founders of the armed struggle in ZAPU. You can complete the list. I am one former ZPRA commanders who worked with ZANU and ZANLA in Mozambique. I know all the routes that we followed throughout up to independence and up to date. The subject under review and the stage at which we have reached as a country demands very principled and deep minded and reasoning people because of the presence of international conspiracies. Principled people never believe in forming a new a new political party as a solution to a problem or to sign out of a unity agreement as a solution. The Zimbabwe African people’s Union (ZAPU) had a measure of leadership qualities in the late Dr. Nkomo. However since his death, that has opened a free for all race to leadership positions, which is a foreign culture in ZAPU. In any case to all members of ZAPU in Unity with ZANU in ZANU PF, the stage is set. John Nkomo Vice-President and Naison Khuthwekhaya Ndlovu becomes National Chairman. Yes Msindo I would like to write a book. My Email adrress. phelemphoko@yahoo.com nxa ufuna ngiza kutshela mfana.

Your contribution shows you are a man of integrity and that you are not interested in fake claims although you are one of the most senior people in Zapu. You were at the same level as Dimiso and are even far more senior than Simon Kaya Moyo. You were more senior than even Jacob Zuma who openly mentioned it at the United Nations in Austria that you were his boss and you should be recognized for it.I hope President Mugabe knows that Zimbabwe would be a better place with more people like you.You achieved so much as our Ambassador to Botswana and to Russia. Now as you go to South Africa we know that you will represent us better that anyone before you.As soon as you left Botswana and that Mandigora came there the image of Zimbabwe changed.I hope that people who read this know that this is the truth as we all know it and i pray that the fakes mentioned in your comment are never given the post of VP.
