ZIMBABWE – HARARE – Rudo Grace Charamba, the wife of President Mugabe’s press secretary, George Charamba, has written to the Swedish ambassador, Sten Rylander, pleading for her removal on the EU sanctions list.
Sweden holds the rotating presidency of the EU bloc.
Her letter was forwarded ahead of the EU ministerial meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second biggest city that will review the sanctions list.
Aged 45, Rudo Charamba, who now describes herself as the former wife of George Charamba is described on the list as a supporter and beneficiary of the regime through close association with a key member of the Government.
She explains that while the two are not officially divorced she and George Charamba parted ways and have lived separately since 2004. In fact, George Charamba has since remarried and has a son out of the second wedlock.
Rudo Charamba says in her correspondence she had tried “everything possible” to get her name off the sanctions list as she believes she does not deserve to be included, given her circumstances.
“I am still officially married to George only because I cannot afford to file for divorce,” she said. “I am out of employment and I am not well.”
She has been in and out of hospital, a source said and her health is said to be deteriorating.
Charamba used to assault her and has a police record for a heavy assault that took place in 2004.
“He left me our home thereafter and he now lives with his second wife,” she said.
She said she no longer used the name Charamba and was not in any way associated with the President’s press secretary. She said she did not in any way benefit from any association with him.
“I have remained quiet because I wanted to protect my children but I cannot continue to suffer like this,” she pleaded.

I hope both the EU and the US will take pity on the ex-wife of this morron Charamba who systematically abused her both mentally and physically. Rudo used to hold a very good job and can hardly be said to have benefitted from being married to Mugabe’s sidekick. To add acid to the injury the real lasting legacy to that ill-fated marriage is that she was left with an HIV infection. Charamba, I do not know you that well, except for his rantings on behalf of his boss, but if he should die before me, I have sworn that no matter where I am in the world, I will make the pilgrimage to his grave and urinate on it.

Hi Mwana wevhu. It was just an error. It says he has a son out of the second wedlock instead of the second marriage. What puzzles me is how he could remarry when Rudo and him are not divorced. Is he just living in with another woman or is this polygamy which he is getting away with because he is in Zanu PF? As for this Rudo, she’s paying for the time she enjoyed. Is Charamba slowly dying from aids then?

Our marriage broke down when we realised we were HIV positive. We do not know who infected who. I’m always out of the country on government assignments, God knows what my wife gets up to when I am away.
