ZIMBABWE – HARARE – MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa’s expensive cellphone was stolen briefly during a press conference to announce the MDC decision to boycott meetings with Zanu-PF in the GNU.
Chamisa’s Blackberry Pearl 8130 disappeared briefly at Harvest House but after security threatened to use metal detectors on the huge number of people who turned up for the meeting, was the cell recovered.
The press conference, attended by a record number of journalists, civic society representatives and diplomats, was sunk into consternation over the theft.
The theft prompted calls to kick out non-journalists from the pressa.
Chamisa was pensive about the theft of the Blackberry, probably one of the most expensive cellphones in the world. But miffed journalists questioned how the MDC was synonymous with theft of cellphones.
“Mahlangu haana kumbopinda here?” one civic society rep said, drawing laughter. Youth minister Thamsanqa Mahlangu, who stands accused of stealing Joseph Chinotimba’s cellphone during a meeting three months ago, was not at the pressa.
The cell was eventually recovered, but had been switched off. The cellphone has many features including a speakerphone system, broadband EV-DO wireless data, EDGE high speed wireless data and trackball.
Chamisa said: “Thank God,” as he was handed back his Blackberry by one of Tsvangirai’s security aides.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai told reporters the MDC was not “pulling out officially”, but would boycott meetings with President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party, a situation that creates a constitutional crisis.
He said the move was prompted by the jailing this week of top MDC official Roy Bennett on terrorism charges.
It showed Zanu-PF to be an “unreliable” partner, Tsvangirai said.
“It has brought home the reality that as a movement we have an unreliable and unrepentant partner in the transitional government,” Tsvangirai said.
