ZIMBABWE – HARARE – Guess what? The Shake Shake opaque beer, phased out in the 90s, is back.

However the Shake Shake will have to continue to compete for the market share with the Scud, which Delta Beverages says it is not phasing out. The Chibuku Shake Shake is made from a mix of sorghum and maize.

Retailing for US$0,50 cents, it is thought to be be a drink for lower-class people.

This thick brown millet beer is shaken vigorously before drinking it because of its thick layer of sediment of sand collected on the bottom of the carton.

It has a powerful yeast flavor that is offset by a lemony tang, surprising given the color. When the liquid has been consumed and you reach the bottom of the carton, standard practice is to slurp up the pile of sludge that remains.

Retailing under the line Chibuku, ‘the beer of good cheer’, it is most regularly enjoyed in a shabeen, a probably illegal, almost certainly dingy spartanly furnished drinking den playing loud repetitive piston-popping kwassa-kwassa music.

A meal in a box, Shake Shake doesn’t pretend to refresh; it is taken as a cheap and efficient intoxicant.

Not to be confused with the tub-thumping scouse club scene, chibuku is the preferred Friday-night medicine for millions of Zimbabweans. It is commonly referred to as ’shake shake’ because of its propensity to settle into its liquid and solid fractions. Shaking restores the beverage to its former grainy off-yoghurt consistency.

Delta Beverages marketing executive, San Muchenje said: We are not phasing out the Scud, but adding value and wide selection for our consumers.”

    2. Its either you are against this beer or you really dont know what it is. You say it has ’sediment of sand’. So the only discription of sadiment you know is that associated with sand, that you learnt in your ZJC Geograpy lessons. Just for your own information Shake – shake and scud are one and they all go through the shaking process. You sould have researced more on this article, even asking the Delta people to describe the process of making this beer and how it came to be named shake shake. Dont gossip for the sake of it.

    11. Shake-shake is a disposable container and is better than the scud that has its container abused in many ways. i still remember foreign bodies being found in the scud due to poor cleaning. I urge Delta to team up with hunyani so as to promote the recycling of the empty shake shake packs as they can be turned into book covers.

I dont drink hangu doro, but to think Delta puts sand in beer and people have to shake so that they drink is really trying people appetite.I remember very well seeing this beer and people drinking. I remember again people boiling water in the container. I agree if delta can talk to hunyani pulp and paper, they can recycle the container. Sand in beer, hahaha. good sense of humour

    26. Shake shake is the commercial equivalent of traditional beer, is legal and sold in most formal beer outlets including big supermarkets. It is everything a beer is and is taken as a matter of choice not because its for poor people. I hold no brief for Chibuku Breweries and suspect that non of their marketing people has seen it but your report is rather annoying for lack of responsible journalism. Maybe its really not your fault because you don’t sound like a trained journalist. The lack of facts and actual knowledge from this piece is disgusting to say the least. Its actually better to write about tea or coffee if you know nothing about traditional beer.
