ZIMBABWE – HARARE – Deputy minister of Energy and Power Development Hubert Nyanhongo’s pirated “free-to-air” Wiztech decoder has been stolen.
The Zanu-PF minister’s decoder was recovered and the person who stole the pirate decoder has been sentenced to 14 months jail. Martin Masango, 32, pleaded guilty to stealing the deputy minister’s decoder.
It means the minister, like many other Zimbabweans, cannot bear watching the soporific ZTV, which his Zanu-PF has abused.
Zimbabwe only has one television station, which is owned by the state. Its single channel beams censored programmes everyday. It also devotes more time on paying homage to President Robert Mugabe and other liberation heroes.
Predictably, those who could not afford DStv end up using pirate broadcasting receivers. This system, known as WizTech, enables them to watch some of DStv programmes for free, including the deputy minister.
Significantly, the fact that the minister watches SABC more than ZTV is a serious indictment on the State broadcaster.
Magistrate Lazarus Murendo sentenced the decoder thief to 18 months, but suspended four months on condition of good behaviour.
The State case is that on August 13, Masango and two of his accomplices who are still at large forced their way into Nyanhongo’s residence through the cottage door. They stole a Phillips 21 inch TV, a Phillips DVD, a WizTech decoder, one pair of shoes and male clothes for Tawanda Nyanhongo.
Masango was apprehended in St Mary’s.
The total value of his heist was US$310 but property valued at US$130 has been recovered. Part of the loot was sold to Masango’s neighbour Collen Musoni, who said he did not know he was receiving stolen property.
Prosecutor Eddie Sibanda said the case was serious and warranted a custodial sentence.
