ZIMBABWE – PLUMTREE – A Police officer was shot and injured by soldiers at Dingumuzi Stadium in Plumtree on Sunday evening, in a fight over a girlfriend.
Sources said the police officer was caught in a cross fire as the soldiers wanted to gun down a member of the public who had had a misunderstanding with one of their colleagues over a girlfriend.
Matabeleland South North police spokesman, Assistant Inspector Trust Ndlovu confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.
He however refused to release more information.
Sources however said 15 soldiers armed with AK rifles descended on the stadium at about 5.15pm after getting information that three members of the public who had a row with one of their colleague, were playing football at the stadium.
The three were in a team, which was playing against a police team from the border town known as Red Swallows.
“When one of the targets saw the soldiers coming, he ran in the direction of some police officers to seek refuge. One of the soldiers however ordered the troops to open fire resulting in four shots being fired, one of which hit a police officer on the arm,” said a Plumtree based police officer.
“The officer who was shot had just come out of the field and was seated on the ground, removing his boots. He was rushed to Plumtree District Hospital, where he was admitted. The bullet is still lodged in his arm.”
When the shots were fired, the soccer players and supporters scurried for cover.
The soldiers are however said to have fled when angry members of the public regained their composure and confronted them over the shooting.
The suspects, who are from 1.3 Infantry Battalion, are still at large.

There have been assured of security by Chiwenga. They can kill at will and nothing will happen. Ethelbert Mugeji threatened the MDC MP and nothing was done.

I am actually wondering on the ongoing lawlessness in Zimbabwe. I understand that the MDC was trying to pretend and tell the world that the situation in Zimbabwe was improving knowing it very well that it was not. Soldiers are just following unlawful orders from their commanders knowing that they are well protected by this unprofessional leader Constantine Chiwenga. But rember, one day the law will take its course and these people will regret in their life. Saddam and his cronies were doing the same but where are they now? These guys think that ZANU(PF) will remain in power forever. This is practically impossible. Dai vaimboziva kuti hakusisina achada ZANU(PF) vaidero vavakutanga kuita reform so that MDC would maybe forgive them as soon as they get into power. I will be just there watching and laughing when the likes of Chiwenga, Zimondi, Shiri and Chihuri face trial. Vachatanga kudzwisa tsitsi and there is no way out for them but only to be brought before the court. Valeri Sibanda is a professional army commander and I would even tell or advise the MDC to keep him in his position. Please musatarisira MDC pasi. Ndiro bato ririkutotonga muZimbabwe because they were voted into power by the people.ZANU(PF) yakatopinda mu unity government through the back door. Please respect the winning party MDC.I think masoja achatanga kudzidza lesson because kana musoja wacho wava kutongwa achange uri one mumatare edzimhosva and remember kuuraya kwavanoita ingozi kumafamilies avo. kana mhuri dzavo dzavakutambura nengozi vachatanga kuita regret. Please soldiers, you should execute your duties professionally, and not comply with unlawful orders from your commanders please, because kana wava kusungwa unosungwa uriwega wega.
