ZIMBABWE – HARARE – The wife of a former CIO boss who mysteriously went blind after leaking details of President Mugabe’s secret wedding with Grace Mugabe has died.
Sylvia Jane Mashingaidze (65), wife of former CIO director-general in 90s Elleck Mashingaidze, died of cardiac arrest at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo after battling with heart problems for the past decade.
And President Mugabe uncharasterically sent condolences to Mashingaidze, who mysteriously went blind after being hauled before the courts as the source of Mugabe’s secret wedding to Grace.
In his condolence message, President Mugabe said: “It is with a deep sense of sadness and grief that I learnt of the untimely death of Sylvia Jane Mashingaidze, wife of Dr Elleck Mashingaidze, our former Director-General of the Central Intelligence Organisation.
“Mrs Mashingaidze’s death last Tuesday evening follows a long and difficult period during which she battled to contain a heart condition. Sadly on that fateful day her heart failed and she was gone forever.”
Mashingaidze was hauled before the courts by Mugabe after being fingered as the mole who leaked details of a report that President Robert Mugabe had secretly married his mistress.
Mashingaidze staunchly denied in a magistrates’ court in the criminal defamation trial of three newspaper executives, that he neither provided information on the alleged civil wedding ceremony nor did he know the reporter said to be related to him.
The late Financial Gazette publisher, Elias Rusike, then editor Trevor Ncube and his deputy Simba Makunike were jailed for a weekend in May following publication of stories that Mugabe,71, had married his former secretary, Grace Marufu, a woman about half his age.
“I’m not the person who told Mr Makunike that story,” Mashingaidze pleaded in court back then. “I am not related to Mr Makunike in any way by marriage or any other way except that we are both members of the human species,” Mashingaidze told a seemingly stunned court.
“I emphatically deny that I know him and I am sure it will be impossible for him to prove that he is related to me,” he sad. “I really don’t kow why he picked on me”.
Mashingaidze also denied knowledge of British expatriate Clive Broe to whom he was said to have referred the newspaper reporter for further confirmation of the marriage.
Broe, a training officer on contract in the justice ministry then also denied speaking to anyone on the telephone confirming the marriage or being present at the ceremony.
Mashingaidze is just lucky to be still in good books with Mugabe given the manner in which the party treats its traitors.
