ZIMBABWE – HARARE – Two armed robbers who raped a Zimbabwean parliamentarian during a break-in at her home have mysteriously been released from jail under a presidential amnesty.
The two were sentenced to 29 years each in prison, but were realeased last weekend in a presidential amnesty that categorically stated that robbery did no qualify for amnesty.
Lovemore Mumvuri, 37, and Shepherd Ngulube, 31, sentenced to 15 years each for rape and 14 years for armed robbery, walked out of jail last Friday. The sentences were supposed to be consecutive but have all been commuted under mysterious circumstances.
zimgGossip heard the order came from Minister Patrick Chinamasa.
The pair allegedly used an axe to break into Zanu-PF Mudzi West (Katsande Aqualinah) MP’s home to the east of Harare, and then ransacked the house before taking turns to rape the parliamentarian, who represents President Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party.
The robbers reportedly made off with various property including a hi-fi, pots, pans, mobile phones and blankets altogether worth Z$37m then.
Some of the property were said to have been recovered in neighbouring Mozambique. At the time of the claimed rapes, Zanu-PF was at the peak of its accusations that the MDC was trying to destabilise the country. At the time, there was widespread suspicion that Zanu-PF was stage managing the incidences, including the feigned shooting of Air Marshall Perence Shiri.
A source told zimGossip: “Rape is a very grave offence, especially in this case when it is committed on a respected member of society. There is no way those guys could have qualified for amnesty. But they are out as we speak. Its mysterious” .

Zim Gossip were not supposed to name the MP. Her identity was protected as far as I remember and it is common journalism etiquette not to name her, same as in not naming children abused by criminals.
