ZIMBABWE – GOKWE – A 65-YEAR-OLD man from Gokwe South smashed to death his two grandchildren left in his care by other family members who had gone for a church service.
The bizarre incident that has left villagers in the area shocked happened at about 5pm on Thursday last week in Mbando village under Chief Sayi.
Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said on the fateful day, Sunungurai Tshuma, was left in the custody of three children aged two, three and nine.
“At about 5pm, Tshuma grabbed the two-year-old infant by the legs and smashed her head several times on the ground. He did the same to the three-year-old,” he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said a neighbour, Misheck Mbando (45), of the same village, heard some commotion and rushed to the accused’s homestead to investigate.
He said Mbando discovered Tshuma holding one of the infants by the legs smashing her on the ground.
“He alerted other villagers who then went on to tie Tshuma’s legs and hands as he was violent. During that time, Lukas Hlaringo, a father of the three-year-old child arrived.
He cleared the faces of the victims who were bleeding profusely from the mouth and nose. The children died soon after,” said Asst Insp Mahoko.
He said the third child, a nine-year-old girl, was lucky to survive as the suspect was caught before he could lay his hands on her.
“The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Tshuma. Investigations are continuing while the police are waiting for post-mortem results,” said the police spokesperson
