ZIMBABWE – HARARE – Regional Integration and International Co-operation minister Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga fell ill and missed all the sessions of the SADC summit, where she adamantly insisted she should go despite her apparent ill health.
The minister, who lost her husband Dr Chris Mushonga (73), an orthopaedic surgeon and former deputy mayor of Harare a month ago, is said to have fallen ill just after her husband’s death.
Her condition is worsening progressively, zimGossip can report. “The minister is much better and had a good rest this morning. She’s feeling better, not 100 percent, but she feels good enough to work. She’s back on schedule,” said a close family source.
Misihairabwi travelled to Kinshasa apparently sick. But her PA said she was dressed and ready for the SADC meetings when she began to feel sick and that her condition was likely a “stomach virus, a light touch of food poisoning or something else” and called the situation “not serious.”
But our source insisted it was serious.
“She was really in bad shape in the plane,” said one of passengers who travelled in a packed Kenya Airways with the minister.
She is said to have spent the duration of the SADC summit sleeping.
“Not sure if it’s a stomach virus yet or something like that, but (she’s) just not feeling well in the stomach, its been like this since the death of her husband.”
Despite being ill, Misihairabwi has continued to work amid concerns about her deteriorating health.
“I have just come out of a meeting with her and she is slightly unwell,” said a diplomat last week. Doctors “are still keeping an eye on her,” added our source, who also said that “she feels terrible about all this.”
She is said to have recently threw up and collapsed during a dinner.
