ZIMBABWE – HARARE – An sms from Gideon Gono to Phillip Chiyangwa has revealed that the one-time high flying central bank governor has hit hard times.

The sms from Gono appeals for US$20000 from the flamboyant business tycoon. The sms has been leaked to the press from Chiyangwa, a loud-mouthed business mogul, who seems to be celebrating the fall of his erstwhile colleague.

Chiyangwa loves flaunting himself as one of the few remaining businessmen in Harare who still has his wealth intact.

The sms says: “Fidza, can you help with 20 000, payable in two weeks. Gideon.”

The sms reveal the dramatic fall of Gono, who used to print money, lots and lots of money that was worth next to nothing. He would then go to the black market to buy forex.

Now all those priviledges are gone after the new Finance minister Tendai Biti ring fenced him to monetary policy issues and dollarised the economy, stopping the reckless minting of cash.

The sms appeal reveal the dire state of the central bank governor’s finances.

Depending on whom you talk to, the architect of Zimbabwe’s hyperinflation is a megalomaniac, a workaholic, or a thief.

He makes no apologies for his furious money-printing, as the country, mired in disease and hunger, inflation beyond calculation and political crisis, kept on spiraling downward. Extraordinary situations call for extraordinary measures, he used to say.

“Apera, apera,” Chiyangwa, said as he showed a reporter the sms. “Avakukumbira cash can you imagine,” he added.

The 49-year-old former tea boy, target of Western economic sanctions and confidant of President Robert Mugabe has made more enemies in Zanu-PF party than any other senior member. And some people think he may be its weak link.

But for now, he has been trimmed to size and the attempt to borrow cash from Chiyangwa is revelation that the governor has hit rock bottom.

    1. This is another stunt. This must be investigated as a possible bribe. Quid pro quo. We just need to find the favours of which this is the return. Chiyangwa is not a registered usuer or moneylender. We are not fooled.

    3. Just because one borrows 20 00 USD does not suggest they are broke. Where can a broke man find money to repay 20 000 USD in one week? How did you confirm that the sms was from Gideon? Gideon is richer than Chiyangwa and that is a fact. He may have got his money through fraud and corruption but he surely knows how to invest his money.

    7. NGAADZOKERE KUNOBIKA TEA MUMAHOFISI. FINANCE MINISTER, TENDAI BITI AND PRIME MINISTER TSANGIRAI (SHUMBA YEMUZIMBABWE)NEED AN EXPERIENCED TEA BOY TO SERVE THEM AS THEY INTELLIGENTLY BRING ZIMBABWE BACK TO SANITY!

      Comment by GURUVA — September 8, 2009 @ 12:43 pm

    8. The text is clear, the money was to be paid back in two weeks- it was not free cash. This may suggest that the borrower might have been experiancing some cash flow problems at that time. This happens to all of us and some bnesses too and it does not imply that the borrower nolonger has any wealth. So to those who are already celebrating the imaginary down fall of the so called" Mr Money", I suggest you wait for the next 100 years.

    9. Only a dumb character would believe Gono is broke. That is how you are taken for a ride by ZanuPF chefs coz some of you reporters are idiots. The SMS is mere STUNT to fool some of you.Gono is richer than the Zim economy. He has been milking the RBZ and CBZ for a long long time.

      Comment by Zuze — September 9, 2009 @ 6:08 am

    10. Hey come on. He could easily borrow this from CBZ which is offering up to USD25,000 loans to individuals. He wouldn’t be that stupid and silly to borrow from Philip. In any case Gono is far much more worth above that amount anyway.
