Villagers in Gadadi and Mfanyana in Mbembesi are planning to hold a cleansing ceremony to appease “spirits” on the road following a series of accidents that have claimed lives of many people in the area.

This follows the recent death of three people who were hit by cars in two separate accidents at Gadadi Business Centre, a place the community now regards as a “black spot”.

The three are Hawulethu Dube and Noel Dlamini (both aged below 10) and Sanele Dube (24).

Yesterday, villagers gathered for a church service at Mfanyana Primary School and consoled the families of the deceased.

Reverend Samuel Mabhena of Golden Gate Ministries facilitated the service where money and foodstuffs were donated to the victims’ families.

Speaking after the church service, Mfanyana village head Mr Judah Mpofu said the community now wanted to conduct cultural services to “cleanse” the place.

He said: “We have done church ceremonies and now want to do cultural practices.

“That part of the road has become a black spot and needs us as the community to come together, brew our traditional beer and slaughter a beast and talk to spirits. It is a practice we had neglected in the past two years.”

He said they had consulted Chief Khayisa Ndiweni and they had set a date in September for the ceremony. The accidents occured on the stretch from Gadadi to Fort Rixon turn-off. Villagers have appealed to Government to spruce up signposts and put speed humps along that section of the road.

“The police should be equipped with cars and motorbikes to be able to patrol the highways rather than to mount roadblocks only,” said one villager.

    1. Normally if the road is not engineering very well we dont notice. Are the curve radii OK? Is the superelevation OK? Maybe the wrong bitumen was used such that the road is slippery. It will be a waste of time to cleanse the place without looking at the geometrical properties of the road section. If humans in their cars violate laws of Physics accidents happen.
