A 14-YEAR-OLD Harare girl yesterday committed suicide in apparent protest against her cousins who had refused to give her food.
It is understood the body of the teenager, whose identity is being withheld, was found hanging from a tree at their Glen View home.
Police spokesman Inspector James Sabau confirmed the case last night.
He said police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. It is understood the girl, who is said to have been short-tempered, argued with two of her cousins in the morning.
She refused to eat the porridge they had prepared, saying it was tasteless. She then demanded a plate of sadza that had been reserved for their grandmother who had gone to town. “She became moody and spent the entire day without saying a word,” said a tenant at the house.
“It was around 3pm when I heard the other children crying.“I dashed to the backyard where I discovered what had happened. The Grade Six pupil’s grandmother said the girl had always been short-tempered.
“She was short-tempered. At times she would spend the entire day in a foul mood.“I actually had to find a way of relating with her,” said the distraught grandmother, who took the girl into her home after the death of her parents.
