THE family of the 11-year-old Tsholotsho girl who was reportedly vomiting pots, buckets and braids has fled its homestead after mysterious fires gutted two huts and scorched a third.
The fires allegedly started breaking out a month ago when the girl stopped vomiting.Gogo MaMpofu, the grandmother of the girl who has since sought refuge at relatives in Pumula North, broke down as she narrated her ordeal to this paper yesterday.
She said the fires had left her without shelter and for close to two weeks she slept in the open. “The fire would just break out and before we knew it the whole hut would be engulfed in flames,” she said.
She said the flames were very fierce and whenever they attempted to douse the flames they increased in intensity and rendered their efforts useless. She said the fires would break out at any time of the day.
“The first fire broke out at 2pm and it gutted a hut — the homestead’s kitchen. Nothing could be salvaged from the kitchen.
“The next one broke out at around 4pm a week later and it razed a bedroom that was used by the girls. Again nothing was recovered from this hut.
“The girls then shifted and came to sleep with me in my hut. That was when the third fire broke out at around 5pm a week later. This fire was relatively smaller in size and we quickly removed our property and we managed to put it out,” she said.
Gogo MaMpofu also revealed that some of the utensils that the girl vomited would have gone missing from the house. She said the girl would vomit these when they started looking for them.
She said the girl’s condition had, however, remarkably improved since she came to Bulawayo, adding that she had not vomited anything since then. She said the only complaint the girl had now was a persistent cough.
She said because of the hasty departure, the girl was not able to attend school. The girl reportedly fell sick in March this year due to malaria and was transferred from Tsholotsho District Hospital to United Bulawayo Hospitals where she was diagnosed with a blood shortage.
The hospital allegedly failed to get a matching blood type. She was discharged. On getting home the girl started drooling. As this was happening, her head, neck and mouth are said to have expanded. She then reportedly vomited braids, a plate, a 20-litre bucket, needles, five-cent Zimbabwean coins as well as a 50-cent South African coin.
The girl’s family, acting on advice from a faith healer, buried the vomited objects in the fields.Later in June, the girl is said to have vomited a pot with two handles, braids and a plate.
The matter was reported to the police who are reported to have been shown the pots and plates that the girl allegedly vomited, prompting the police to issue out an appeal to members of the public who could help to come to the girl’s aid.
