THREE rogue policemen, who shared 40 cellphones with a thief who had stolen them from a city shop in exchange for the suspect’s freedom, appeared in court on Monday.

The trio — Marko Makuyana (34), Prosper Muwishi (34) and Lawrence Gangarahwe (31), all stationed at Epworth Police Station — is accused of freeing Freeman Sithole, the suspected cellphone thief, in exchange for 30 of his loot of 40 handsets.

The cops were, however, not formally charged with criminal abuse of duty when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Archie Wochiunga on Monday who remanded them out of custody to April 13 for trial.

The three cops are accused of splitting the 40 cellphones, 10 apiece, with the suspected thief.Prosecutor Mrs Phyllis Zvenyika is alleging that on February 28 this year the three were tipped that Sithole had the stolen cellphones at his house at 1258 Makomo in the high-density suburb of Epworth.

The three, it is alleged, teamed up and went to Sithole’s place where they arrested him and recovered 40 cellphones from him. They allegedly took him to Epworth Police Station for questioning.

During interrogations, it is said, Sithole admitted breaking into a shop along Cameron Street where he stole the cellphones. It is further alleged that they agreed with Sithole that they take 30 of the stolen cellphones in exchange for his freedom.

Sithole complied and he was released from police custody, the State says.On March 16, the State alleges, detectives from CID
Stores arrested Sithole after they were tipped that he was the one who had broken into the shop in Cameron Street and stolen cellphones.

Sithole was interviewed and again reportedly admitted stealing the cellphones in question.During the interrogations, Sithole allegedly indicated that three policemen had previously arrested him and demanded 30 cellphones in exchange for his freedom.

The three were arrested and one of the cellphones was recovered from Makuyana, who then led the detectives to Watson Muyambo where eight more phones were recovered.

Three cellphones were recovered from Muwishi while Gangarahwe had six cellphones, it is alleged.

    3. Somhlaba mthunzi your comment is mis placed. Nigimbis are pple are well. They might be doing drugs for sure but it shows the place is conducive for that. We shld beat them at the own game not to steal from them. thats wrong papa.
Lets come up with a proper solution not to be xenophobic.
look what happened in SA they kill innocent foreigners accusing them all sort of evil things, but is it true. One wonders what they archived.
