THE 41-year-old Gwanda man suspected of stealing a herd of 11 cattle and was admitted to hospital suffering from a mysterious illness has died, police confirmed yesterday.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe said the suspect, Mlaki Ncube, died on Saturday at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) where he had been transferred to from Gwanda Provincial Hospital.

Ncube of Ngoma Village under Chief Marupi area in Gwanda made headlines after a beast bellowed in his stomach.
    His stomach was also swelling.

Ncube was also suffering from abdominal pains, resulting in him failing to relieve himself.

When Zimgossip visited him on Friday at Gwanda Provincial Hospital, he admitted to stealing the beasts and continuously pleaded with the police to release him so that he could go to his rural home to seek herbal treatment.

Insp Dzirutwe said police officers who arrested Ncube and local community members actually heard a bellowing sound coming from his stomach.

“We actually heard a bellowing sound like that of a cow mooing while he was admitted to Manama Hospital, which is why hospital authorities decided to transfer him to Gwanda,” a witness told Zimgossip on Friday.

Narrating his ordeal from his hospital bed, Ncube admitted that he stole the beast, insisting that he had been bewitched by the owners of the cattle.

“I can’t go to the toilet to relieve myself and my stomach is continuously rumbling and I am in terrible pain and I believe these are acts of witchcraft for the offence that I committed,” he said on Friday.

Ncube was arrested with his village head, Madubeko Dube (63) and his son, Tsokolo Dube (43) during an anti-stock theft operation code-named operation Inkomo Wazithathangaphi.

Insp Dzirutwe said they managed to recover 29 head of cattle worth US$6 000 during the exercise.

The exercise followed an outcry from villagers in Shanyaugwe, Ngoma, Selonga, John Dip and Guyu over rampant cattle rustling activities in their areas.

    1. These things have happened before and the solution has always been there…but the problem if you take Dzirutwe to be the prov. spokesperson in MATABELELAND WHERE HE KNOWS NO CULTURE OF THE PEOPLE HE WILL ALWAYS SPECUlate…..these are the things that hurt most of us….any other post can be offered to any tribel as long as they speak the local language but to liase with people whom you dont understand their culture…is arrogant and its tribal domination at its worst…..

    6. Wena somhlaba mthunzi,- don’t be a tribalist, which world are you living in? A criminal is a criminal, where does culture fit in unless if stock theft is part of the culture? The problem with you Ndebeles is you except everyone to speak your language once they land in your province unlike when you visit other Shona speaking areas, noone even questions your language. Dzirutwe is a qualified employee who was assigned to work in that province and I dont see any problem as we do not have problems with Ndebele guys working in shona speaking areas. If you were a child of God you would know we are one. If God was a tribalist…
