A FORMER police inspector who was on the run for over six months left a Kadoma court shell-shocked when he revealed in his defence outline that he was unable to surrender himself to the police because he had been recuperating after losing a part of his private parts.
Amos Manyota (54), appeared before Kadoma magistrate Mr Remigious Jemwa last week facing a charge of criminal abuse of duty as defined in section 174 (1), (a), (b) of the Criminal law (Codification and Reform) Act.
It is alleged that on 28 June 2009, Manyota who was the Officer in Charge at Rimuka Police Station in Kadoma, sought a motor vehicle from an officer Laston Machake on the pretext that he wanted to attend a crime scene.
Manyota however, summoned Constables Tendai Gurajena and John Kadzimba who were in uniform and gave them a service pistol and three magazines. He then ordered the junior officers to go to Kanyemba Mine in Battlefields to displace some people working at one of the mine’s shafts.
The two police officers were accompanied by two male adults who claimed to be the new owners of the shaft.Manyota allegedly gave the constables a directive to fire two warning shots in the air upon arrival.
The four succeeded in displacing the mine workers but the following day, the rightful owners of Kanyemba Mine reported the matter to Police General Headquarters leading to the arrest of the quartet.
On hearing about the arrest of his junior officers and his two friends, it is alleged that Manyota then went on the run. Manyota was eventually arrested in November 2009 and was remanded in custody.
Appearing in court last week, Manyota, who was represented Joyce Murambasvina of Murambasvina Legal Practitioners, pleaded not guilty to the charge of criminally abusing his office.
He denied ever ordering the constables to carry out the offence stating in his defence that on the day in question, he was attending a church service.
“On June 28 2009, I was at Johanne Masowe Church between 9am and 1500 hours. After that, I went to my office to prepare some documents for my superiors.
“I then went to my house and took a shower but when I was taking the bath, I discovered that apart of my private parts was missing and I was shocked,” said Manyota, to the amusement of the gallery.
Manyota said that he fell unconscious and was surprised to wake up in an unknown vehicle the following morning.“I woke up in a vehicle the next day and when I asked the owners of the vehicle were my service pistol was they told me it was taken by a certain police officer.
“I later got off the vehicle and proceeded to Mount Darwin were my church leader resides so that I could get some treatment,” said Manyota. Manyota is out of custody on bail and will appear in court again on February 4 2010 when his trial will continue.
