IN an incident that left many people in the city centre shell-shocked, a Gweru businessman reportedly assaulted a blind man over a bottle teat valued at US$2.
The incident happened between Sixth Street and Robert Mugabe Way near Chicken Inn around 4pm on Wednesday.
A witness, Mr Samuel Zhou, said a blind man, led by his son aged three years, entered Value Chain Supermarket and started moving around the shop.“In the process, the boy picked the bottle teat from the shelves and started chewing it. The pair then left the shop as the blind man was not aware that the child had picked the teat,” he said.
Mr Zhou said the shop-owner only identified as Mr Mushonga followed the blind man and demanded money for the bottle teat.He said the blind man tried to explain to Mr Mushonga that he was not aware that the child had picked the teat.
Mr Zhou said the blind man pleaded with Mr Mushonga, saying he was sorry for what the child did but he did not have the money to pay for the teat, but Mr Mushonga could not buy the story.
He instead started insulting the blind man, accusing him of encouraging his child to steal. The altercation attracted the attention of the blind man’s wife who is also blind who was waiting for the pair outside the shop.
According to another witness, Mrs Nomsa Nkomazana, the wife tried to plead with Mr Mushonga but again he refused to budge. This, she said, prompted the woman to offer her cellphone as surety while the couple looked for the US$2 to pay for the damaged teat, but Mr Mushonga would have none of it.
He instead punched the blind man on the nose and he started bleeding profusely and members of the public who were around reportedly threatened to mete out instant justice on Mr Mushonga who ran away and locked himself in his office.
Asked to comment, Mr Mushonga who refused to disclose his first name confirmed the “theft” of the bottle teat but denied assaulting the blind man. Mr Mushonga said in fact it was the blind man who was threatening to assault him with his “stick”.
“When I realised he was violent, I took him to the police so those people claiming that I assaulted him just want to tarnish my image,” he said.
