A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD Concession man could not stomach starting this year without his sound system and committed suicide on New Year’s eve after realising that his radio was no longer functioning.

According to Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Inspector Memory Pamire, Dickson Zhoya of Ndire West Farm in Concession became upset when he realised that his radio had developed a fault and could no longer play cassettes.

“He was enjoying himself on New Year’s eve and he was anticipating to celebrate the New Year listening to music. He had lined up a number of cassettes, which he was hoping to play in celebration.

“He got very disappointed when he discovered that the radio was no longer playing music,” she said. Inspector Pamire said Zhoya had an altercation with his elder brother Amon Zhoya (23) whom he blamed for disabling the radio.

At around 8pm, Zhoya locked himself in his bedroom where he consumed an unnamed pesticide.

The following morning, a relative, Tapiwa Samupingira, found Zhoya lying on the floor, writhing in agony from stomach pains.
He was ferried by a tractor to Howard Mission Hospital in Chiweshe but he died on his way

Inspector Pamire said it was disturbing that Zhoya had decided to take his own life.

She said suicide cases were common in the province and urged members of the public to approach the Police public relations officers when they have problems.

“It is always worrying to hear cases of suicide. Our appeal to members of the public is that they should feel free to approach the public relations department at our police stations because it is their duty to help people with social problems.

The police public relations department is available at all police stations and people should not hesitate to approach us,” she said.

    2. No one commits suicide over a radio unless there are some underlying problems. This guy had serious issues with his family prior to the radio incident. The radio was just a trigger.
