THERE was pandemonium at a funeral wake in Mpopoma suburb in Bulawayo when mourners fled a corpse after it reportedly “rose from the dead” and started “knocking” on the coffin.
The incident occurred last week at a house situated near Mpopoma Park during evening prayers.A mourner told reporters that the body had been brought home in preparation for burial the following day.
“As you know our African tradition entails that when a person dies, a day before burial he or she is brought home. We all thought that it was a routine tradition not knowing that we were going to get the shock of our lives,” said the mourner.
The mourner said they heard noise coming from the coffin while a pastor was giving a sermon.“It was really scary because everyone was quiet, listening attentively to the pastor and all of a sudden people who were sitting inside the house started screaming,” he said.
The mourner said the pastor inquired as to what was happening only to get a response that the corpse had “knocked”.
“However, the pastor quickly quelled the screams and told the mourners that they were frightened by his preachings as everyone was going to die and that it was impossible for anyone to rise from the dead apart from Jesus Christ,” he said.
The source said after the screams had subsided and the pastor having recommenced preaching the corpse started “knocking” again which resulted in mourners sitting inside the house fleeing outside.
“There was almost a stampede because everyone was afraid even the pastor was visibly so. Mourners who were sitting outside also took off headed for the gate.”
The source said some male mourners together with the pastor later gathered courage and went inside the house to check if the corpse was still knocking.
“After they got back inside, the knocking had reportedly stopped but no one dared open the coffin for fear of the unknown,” said the source.
The source said some of the mourners immediately left before the sermon ended.“We are Africans my brother and I do not blame those people for fleeing because no one knew what was happening,” he said.

I know we are sooo African, but if I was there I would have opened the coffin; sometimes the person is still alive depending on the cause of death. People have been known to wake up in the morgue.

Your story is not conclusive. What happened afterwards. Was the person alive or it was some kind of a trick?

Silly people, the person was alive. Tsk tsk tsk.

I thought the pastor was preaching about salvation beyond if it happened Why then did He not take courage to open the Coffin. It has happened elswhere in the world. I guess as Africans we are so superstitious and naive.

In the olden times in England, they used too tie a bell on the outside by the grave to a string from inside the coffin in case the departed arose, though this wasnt always a great idea asyou ended up with the devil’s reject.

How can a sane person ignore a knock from a coffin? This just shows that mourners were more ready to believe in the dark spirit world while ignoring common sense which dictates that the peson was asking for help. Poor soul, he/she could hear relatives burrying him alive instead of saving him.
With such form of stupidity being demonstrated by a buch of mature people people, we may as well forget about development in Zim

The story does not have a single element of truth, ingano iyi, there is no way the chief/sabhuku would have agreed to let the burial go on under such bizzare circumstances, I don’t like to think all the men and women there agreed the “corpse” be buried without checking. Again, if the incident happened the night before burial, the coffin was or would still be opened the following day just before burial for body viewing. Please nyorai nyaya dzechokwadi or you would rather introduce a column cold Ngano for such stories.
