A commuter omnibus crew yesterday kidnapped a police officer from the Support Unit after he tried to stop them from picking up passengers at an undesignated point as part of the ongoing “Operation Chenai”.

The driver and the conductor beat up the policeman and tried to push him out of their moving kombi.

The incident occurred along Mbuya Nehanda Street at around 6:30pm and at the time of writing, the police officer — who is yet to be identified — had not been found.

Police reinforcements were called in to track down the kombi. This writer witnessed the kidnapping of the cop, who was part of a group deployed at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Mbuya Nehanda Street.

The kombi crew stopped at the undesignated point and the police ordered them to drive to Market Square Bus Terminus, a designated pick up point.

The policeman got into the kombi and told the driver to drive to Harare Central Police Station. However, the driver — whose colleagues were calling him “Shapiro” — sped off with the cop inside.

He and his conductor punched the cop as they drove off and tried to push him out of the moving kombi but the policeman fought back and held on.

His colleagues who were along Mbuya Nehanda Street tried to stop the kombi but the rogue driver nearly ran over them. The kombi turned left into Charter Road, speeding through red traffic lights.

They then turned right into Chinhoyi Street and could be seen still beating the policeman.

A police Mercedes Benz — with senior officers inside including a Chief Superintendent — that was nearby gave chase as soon as a report of the incident was received.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena yesterday said they would get to the bottom of “this very serious offence.

It is a very serious offence which amounts to kidnapping because you cannot move a person from one point to another without his or her permission”.

He said the public should co-operate with police as they carried out their constitutional duties.

“We are not harassing anyone but we want to make sure that the streets are safe for everyone,” said Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena

    5. How come you do not get anyone’s consent when abducting members of the opposition party. It seems you only want to apply the law where it suits you. You do not get anyone’s permission when abducting, do you?

    6. Ini ndainge ndiri mukombi macho ndichienda kumbare. The drunk police man demanded for a bribe and ordered the kombi not go anyway until he was given US$20, there was an attempt to push him out of the kombi when it was stationary. He was given an a further oppurtunity to alight when he was told that the kombi is about to go. He therefore chose to go otherwise he should have dropped off and file the charges. hapana nyaya apa, the corrupt copper should get the sake and the case should end there.

    10. ZIM DAILY, you are running out of stories. You are so used to reporting negative news but now things have changed. There is plenty of positives that are happenning in Zimbabwe now but you don’t want to hear about it.Why don’t you please find some other country with a proper crisis that you can report on.You can’t fool people,we can tell the difference between reality and fiction.

      ABDUCTION/KIDNAPPING MY ARSE

      Comment by MAJAIRA — December 12, 2009 @ 9:20 am

    11. I agree with most of the sentiments above. Bvudzijena should be ashamed of himself, when he was asked on countless occasions about the activisits who had been abducted with the complicity of his terrorist organisation what did he say?. Haunyari here nhai Bvudzijena when you say such things why dont you just shut up. Do you think that the general public is so stupid to think you are part of a law enforcement agency when you are so selective in the application of the law and you abduct innocent Zimbabweans routinely. Did you not know where Jestina Mukoko and other activists were when the Court instructed that they be brought to Court. Now that a member of yor terrorist organisation is involved in this very suspicious incident you are now quoting the law. You should question your conscience before uttering rubbish to the press.

    14. In a nomal world, people respect their police officers. In Zimbabwe, the Police are partisan. No body except Zanu respects the police.

    15. I somehow do not feel sorry for the cop. If you have kombis and know what happens during these ridiculous “operations” you would sniff like me and say he probably got what he deserved. The boys fought fire with fire (even though they will never win this). The story is obviously spiced up, i mean driving and fighting?
Efforts are being made to put things right in Zim so get rid of these ridiculous “operations” that get nothing done axcept line the cops pockets with money. I mean is there a country in the world with the biggest mismatch in police presence as Zimbabwe? You would literally be killed in the city centre in Bulawayo in broad daylight with no hope in hell of a police attendence yet if you jump into a kombi on a 5km stretch you will be stopped no less than 5 times (both ways if you came back) and extorted for spurious reasons.
Last year a dimwit female officer on Harare Road even tried to claim that because my licence had been converted to a british one i had to carry my passport around so i had to grease her! I was ferrying building stuff up and down and you will not believe it if I say everytime I passed her she ran the same line like a robot! No wonder the boys snapped and retaliated.Maybe they will think twice before carrying out extortions.

    22. These police officers are up to no good. These days they are carrying out a useless excercise where they are arresting people drinking in bottle stores leaving out the real criminals who waylay and rob people day and night,The cops are well aware of the blackspots but waste their energy arresting law abiding citizens. Shame on them.
