Harare — A teacher in Mashonaland East has been transferred to another school after he was found guilty of kissing a Grade 6 girl in 2007.
Jabulani Mpande, formerly a teacher at Chishawasha Primary School, last Friday had an appeal seeking to reverse the transfer rejected by the Labour Court.
In June 2007, a disciplinary committee constituted by the Ministry of Education recommended that he be transferred to another school because he was “overfriendly” with pupils, a situation that could lead to improper associations.
This was after the girl in question told the committee that she was in love with Mpande. The committee also found there was bad blood between Mpande and the headmistress and it was in neither party’s best interests for them to continue working together.
The teacher appealed to the Labour Court to have the decision to transfer him reversed.On Friday Labour Court president Justice Betty Chidziwa rejected the application, saying cases of child abuse were on the increase.
“Children at school have to be protected from such behaviour. There was also evidence of bad blood between the teacher and headmistress; such relations would disturb the smooth running of the school thereby interfering with the interests of students.
“The transfer would also impress it upon the teacher to desist from improper association with pupils.”Accordingly, the appeal against the penalty imposed is dismissed,” read part of the judgment.
The teacher had appealed for a cancellation of the transfer arguing that his family lived in Chishawasha. It could not be established yesterday at which school he now teaches although he is understood to be in Mashonaland East.

very very very disgusting, assuming the CHILD is like 12. when is sexual abuse gong to stop in zimbabwe. this guy is no different to a rapist. given more time, i wonder what would have happened…(sad really). and i geuss the police are doing nothing about it as usual. God help that country its so backward and so so immoral. thought the Western Countries were bad, but all the evil resides in Zimbabwe.

The transfer of a teacher on the basis of misconduct, especially an unGodly association with minors, is disturbing to say the least. I think its time people consider castration in an age where the police are empowered to shoot to kill criminals. It’s time to call a spade a spade. An eye for an eye is the answer to the issue of child abuse.

Hie,
Hey, when is child abuse not a punishable offence in Zimbabwe. When I was a Child protection officer in that country, this case should have been processed through criminal Courts and i would have been a complainent ( on behalf of the child). Ibhinya ka iri. The issue of a teacher being transfered to another school, does not itself minimise the seriousness of the offence , in fact it hightens our concerns regarding any future contact with other children, including his own ( assuming that he is heterosexual) .

there is more to this story..i dont think this teacher kissed the grade 6 pupil. hanzi this teacher was “over friendly” and there was “bad blood between him and the headmistress”….something is not right. maybe this headmistress wanted to get rid of the teacher…..maybe the teacher dumped the headmistress…there is more to this nyaya…..coz usually child abuse cases are not taken litely….
